Inspired by Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein’s groundbreaking documentary, The Business of Being Born, Water Babies is being developed as an alternative to traditional birth programming such as the highly successful A Baby Story and Special Delivery.

The show follows families of all types who for a variety of reasons have chosen to deliver their babies at home or in a holistic birthing center or otherwise outside of the traditional, highly medicated hospital birthing environment which treats pregnancy and labor as an illness to be fixed rather than as a normal part of life.

The show centers around a fascinating group of midwives who specialize in unmedicated water births. We explore not only their day-to-day practice and the families who come in their doors in search of a better birthing experience, but also the impact on the lives and families of the midwives themselves, whose schedules are dictated by the woman who goes into labor at 3 am and labors for 18 hours.
